Hi,
The ETSI TTCN-3 maintenance team has been looking at real time TTCN-3. Either Gyorgy or Jens can give more details of where we are on that issue. I know they are both very busy at this time, so a reply may be a bit slow in coming.
I do not recollect that continuous signals were discussed (but I have not followed developments too closely for the past few months so I could be mistaken). ETSI has a strong interest in moving TTCN-3 into automotive testing. If there is a real user need for this feature then we should consider updating the standard accordingly. As always, things will happen quicker if there are concrete suggestions to move the work forward.
For your information the ETSI Board has approved funding to continue TTCN-3 maintenance in 2005 (approx. 2 man-months).
Regards,
Anthony Wiles

Subject: AW: Real-Time tests in TTCN-3
Hi Mr. Karlsson,
We have been investigating the use of TTCN-3 in automotive testing.
The biggest obstacle in TTCN-3 is indeed the lack of standardized and "comfortable" ways for testing real-time requirements. The problem can also be seen from a more general view. Since TTCN-3 has primarily been designed for testing of telecommunication systems, it handles single discrete events conveniently. However, the time characteristics of discretized, continuously sent values (signals) can not easily be tested with respect to their time behavior.
We would also be interested to hear if there any recent advances to extend TTCN-3 to solve this issue.
Best regards,
Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Hendrata

Betreff: Re: Real-Time tests in TTCN-3
I need to be able to measure the "real" time a bus message got transmitted/received. In TTCN-3 today one can only know the time in which a message was inserted in (or removed from) a port queue.
Of course, one can manually inspect the log files, but in my
opinion TTCN-3 should be able to handle this intrinsically. If this could be achieved I think the language would be embraced in many new areas (such as the automotive industry).

Stefan Karlsson

Well, I guess there could be. What is your specific
need, anyway?
