Interim Version of TTCN-3 Part 1 17 Sep 2009 10:09 #7616

Hello,

from our viewpoint at TestingTech, there are two possibilities for the
get testcase function, both with drawbacks.

The first would be a 'normal' external/builtin function, meaning that it
makes only sense to be called during the execution
of a testcase (as otherwise, the testcase name would be undefined).
Thus, it would not be possible to use this kind
of function inside a template as it is undefined at which point a
template is instantiated (Especially for performance reasons,
templates should be instantiated, if possible, before the testcase
execution phase to avoid unnecessary time consumption
during that phase). Since templates are normally independent of
testcases (and could be used by several testcases), such
independent instantiation would otherwise not be possible anymore.

If that is the case and the test case name should nevertheless be part
of a template/message, it needs to be passed
into the template as a parameter from the instantiating testcase.

The other solution would be to treat templates containing calls to the
get testcase name function differently from other
templates, quasi adding an additional (implicit) parameter to such a
template. This makes the feature more usable (and place the burden on
the compiler and compiler implementer) and would only cause the
instantiation problem for such templates while other templates can still
be instantiated at any point.

While we prefer the first solution as it is 'cleaner' (and more easy to
integrate into the existing Tools) and more in sync with the
nothing-is-implicit philosophy of TTCN-3, the second solution would
probably be more usable (because the user does not need to define the
additional template parameters themselves).

Similar considerations must be taken for the error verdict in
expressions as the time of the instantiation of a template is undefined,
thus probably causing an error verdict not to make much sense (if the
template is instantiated outside of the scope of a testcase during test
system configuration).

Best Regards,

Jacob Wieland
